Welcome

Dear Candidate

Thank you for your interest in the position of Assistant Director – Highways Operations. This is a very exciting time to be joining the Council as we deliver our Corporate Plan and focus on growth and infrastructure within the County.  This will see 100,000 new homes being built through to 2031 and a review of the way the highway service is delivered as our current arrangements reach their conclusion in 2024.

Hertfordshire is part of the UK’s economic engine room with some of the Country’s busiest roads. The County Council recognises the importance of investing in a well maintained network to keep Hertfordshire’s Highways operating at optimum efficiency.

Hertfordshire is a Council with big plans and bold ambitions. We are seeking an influential individual to help drive the department forward with a long-term strategic vision of how services will need to develop to meet changing needs. You will work closely with the Director of Environment and Infrastructure building trusting and effective working relationships with elected Members in order to continue delivering quality services for all those who live in, work in or visit the County.

The Assistant Director of Highways Operations is responsible for promoting Hertfordshire and the development of innovative and efficient services demonstrating our core values and behaviours. Leading as the Council’s principal advisor on Operational Highways matters you will need to be confident in providing challenge as well as ensuring ongoing value for money and efficiency whilst maintaining effective and robust financial and operational controls.

With a relevant degree or professional qualification you’ll understand your department’s challenges and know how to deliver effective projects with a good grasp of the statutory and regulatory responsibilities of Local Government. You will have extensive contractual management experience to help shape the future of Hertfordshire’s Highways department.

In return we offer a competitive salary and excellent pension, together within a challenging and rewarding role that provides the scope to be innovative and make a significant contribution to the leadership of the County Council and beyond.
